Comprehensive Dental Exam
Dental exams are a critical component of maintaining your oral health. They are essential for determining the presence of a wide array of different oral health issues, enabling us to provide you with the treatments you need to keep your mouth and smile healthy and beautiful. However, if it's your first visit to our office or it has been a while since your last dental exam, we need to more than just look over your mouth. At Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry, we provide comprehensive dental exams to help provide you with the best oral care to meet your needs.
Going Over Your Medical History
Part of your comprehensive dental exam involves going over your medical history. We discuss any medical conditions you have, as well as conditions that run in your family. Certain medical conditions can increase your risk for oral health issues or can impact the types of treatments you receive. Oral health issues can also exacerbate certain health conditions. In addition to your medical history, we also go over things like any medications you are taking, your lifestyle habits, such as smoking and alcohol use, as well as your diet.
Dental Health Assessment
We perform a complete dental health assessment during your comprehensive exam. We look over the entire condition of your mouth. Your teeth are checked for signs of decay, cavities, and physical damage. Some dental restorations, such as fillings, veneers, crowns, and bridges are looked over. Your gums are assessed for redness, swelling, and recession. Periodontal pockets are measured, and we assess your need for treatment.
Another part of assessing your dental health is an oral cancer screening. This screening is a quick and painless process. We look over the soft tissues in your mouth, looking for signs of any abnormalities. We also use the VELscope oral cancer scanner, which uses harmless light to check for precancerous and cancerous cells. Detecting oral cancer in its earliest stages is essential for getting the treatment you need right away.
In addition to going over the visible structures in your mouth, we also take digital X-rays. These images, which use electronic technology to capture, provide us with a unique look into the hidden parts of your mouth. We can see the spaces between your teeth, their roots, and your jawbone. These images enable us to check for decay and cavities between your teeth, root damage, bone loss, abscesses, cysts, impacted teeth, and more. X-ray images allow us to get a complete picture of your oral health. This enables us to provide you with a customized treatment to help you keep your mouth healthy and your smile beautiful. Following your exam, we take the time to go over any issues that we have found and discuss your treatment options. We go over proper oral hygiene practices to help you optimize your brushing and flossing habits at home. We also take the time to go over any questions that you might have, as well as any concerns. All of your information is recorded and stored in your dental file.
With a comprehensive dental exam, we can help to provide you customized care for optimal oral health. If it has been a while since your last dental exam, or you are new to the area, call Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry at (623) 562-5230 to schedule your comprehensive dental exam today.
