Laser used for laser dentistry at Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry We live in a time where new technological developments are being made every single day. Advances in dental technology have greatly improved how we can diagnose different issues and provide you with care, greatly improving the outcomes of your dental care and your patient experience. One of these technological developments is laser dentistry. At Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry, we use laser dentistry for several different treatments, allowing us to optimize your oral care and the health of your mouth.

Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry is a treatment that involves using a dental laser to perform a variety of different procedures. The laser uses a concentrated beam of light approximately the thickness of a human hair. The wavelength of the laser can be adjusted, allowing it to be used for different purposes. Depending on the set wavelength, we can cut soft tissue or remove bone. The laser can even be used to stimulate the growth of new tissue.

Uses for Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry can be used in many different situations.
•  Teeth whitening. Lasers can aid in enhancing the effects of bleaching agents during in-office whitening.
•  Treating gum disease. With a laser, we can remove infected gum tissue, which can then make scaling and root planing easier. It can also be used to eliminate bacteria from periodontal pockets, seal periodontal pockets, and stimulate the growth of new tissues to encourage healing.
•  Treating cavities. The laser can be used to remove decay from a cavity, preparing the cavity for a filling. The laser allows for us to preserve more of your natural tooth structure in the process.
•  Performing a root canal. A laser can be used to disinfect the inside of an infected tooth following the removal of the pulp.
•  Soft tissue biopsies. The laser allows for precise removal of an abnormality, or a portion of an abnormality, for a biopsy.
•  Oral surgery. Lasers are taking the place of scalpels in many oral surgical procedures.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

There are numerous benefits of laser dentistry, some of which include:
•  Incredible accuracy. The laser provides pinpoint accuracy, allowing us to target only the necessary tissue. This preserves more of your natural tissue. The accuracy of the laser also reduces tissue trauma, which can greatly reduce pain and swelling during recovery.
•  Less bleeding. The laser cauterizes as it cuts, greatly reducing the amount of bleeding you experience.
•  Less anesthesia is required during treatments.
•  Shorter recovery.
•  Reduced fear and anxiety. With a laser, treatment is much less invasive. Additionally, with reduced pain and bleeding, patients with anxiety can feel more at ease during necessary treatment.

How Safe Is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry is very safe. Just like using any other tool to perform dental treatments, however, there are still some risks that are present. The light emitted from the laser can harm your eyes. Before treatment, you are provided with special eyewear to prevent issues. Using the wrong wavelength can also cause permanent damage. We are highly experienced in the use of lasers to perform dental treatment, which greatly reduces any risks you might experience.

Laser dentistry allows us to provide you with a much greater quality of care, helping to optimize your oral health and improve your patient experience. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry today at (623) 562-5230.
