Does Whitening Teeth Damage Your Enamel?

Does Whitening Teeth Damage Your Enamel?In-office teeth whitening is a great way to get a beautiful, bright smile. While there are many store-bought options available, they don't offer the same effects, and depending on the ingredients, you might even damage your teeth in the long run. Certain whitening treatments can damage the enamel.

What is the Enamel?

The enamel is the protective outer coating of the teeth, and while it is considered the body's hardest substance, it isn't impenetrable to damage. The enamel protects the teeth so that you don't feel discomfort when you drink or eat something hot or cold. Unfortunately, if the enamel is softened or lost, the inner portions of the tooth will be susceptible to damage.

How Does Over-Whitening Affect the Teeth?

Overuse of whitening treatments – especially those found in your local drug store – can cause damage to your enamel and oral health. Excessive whitening can weaken the enamel, causing tooth sensitivity and opening up the inner structures to damage from bacteria and acid. You might also experience gum sensitivity, leading to inflammation and eventual gum disease. Additionally, as your enamel is lost, you'll notice your teeth look yellow and stained – the exact opposite effect of your whitening treatment.

What about In-Office Whitening?

Professional tooth whitening is perfectly safe on your enamel as long as you don't overdo it. In-office whitening programs are safer and more regulated than store-bought brands, plus you'll receive the professional guidance and treatment you need to ensure optimal results. Plus, if you have fillings, crowns, or veneers that won't whiten, we can help you to get an overall whiter and brighter smile with our in-office treatment options.
