Also referred to as general anesthesia, IV sedation usually are dispensed through an IV tube which is placed in your arm. Once the drug is administered, then you will end up becoming utterly unconscious until we complete the dental procedure.
Upon the completion of the dental procedure, you will finally wake. While you might have woken up, you will still be groggy for several hours. This is one of the main reasons why we encourage our clients to organize alternative means of transport before their dental procedures.
If your procedure involves IV sedation, then someone has to accompany you to our practice. Alternatively, you can organize with a taxi driver to pick you up after the dental procedure.
Procedures Which Require IV Treatments
Apart from IV sedation, oral sedation before the dental procedure will also need a ride back home. It's essential to familiarize yourself with some of the dental procedures which will require IV sedation. Some of the methods which require IV sedation include complicated treatments such as root canals, teeth extractions and placement of implants.
On top of that, we highly recommend IV treatments for individuals with severe or moderate anxiety, patients who tend to have difficulties getting numb and patients who may want to complete several dental procedures within a single dental treatment.
Benefits of IV Sedation
Benefits of IV sedation during dental procedures include a higher safety level, precise amounts of anesthesia will be administered, fewer incidences of vomiting, urinary retention, malignant hyperthermia, pulmonary complications and patients will come out of the drug quickly.
If you have a dental procedure which requires the use of IV scheduled with us, then we highly encourage you to either come with someone to practice or look for an alternative means of transport to take you home. No need to worry; we will always crosscheck with you before the dental procedure begins.
