DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Detection

Diagnodent laser at Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry Cavities are an incredibly common dental issue. While commonly associated with younger patients, approximately 91% of adults in the United States have developed at least one cavity in their adult teeth. Regular dental exams are essential for detecting the presence of cavities in their earliest stages. However, some cavities begin inside of the teeth, where they cannot be detected by conventional methods. At Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry, we can detect these cavities with DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection.

What Is a Cavity?

A cavity is a small pit that forms in your tooth as a result of decay. Decay occurs when the acids produced by plaque and bacteria, as well as acids from certain types of foods, sit on the surfaces of your teeth. These acids eat away at the protective tooth enamel, causing it to grow weak. Eventually, these weak spots give way to cavities. Once cavities form, they cannot be reversed. Instead, they need to be treated right away. Without treatment, cavities continue to grow larger and deeper, compromising the structural integrity and health of the affected teeth.

DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Detection

DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection is an advanced technology that allows us to detect the presence of cavities in their earliest stages. It is used as part of your routine dental visits, in addition to visual inspections of your teeth as well as digital x-rays. Visual inspections enable us to see decay and cavities on the surfaces of your teeth while x-rays show us to decay and cavities between your teeth. With DIAGNOdent, we can see decay forming under the surface of your teeth, where they are otherwise invisible to the naked eye and digital x-ray technology.

How Does DIAGNOdent Work?

DIAGNOdent is a completely painless, very quick process. Once your teeth have been cleaned, we use the laser, which uses a harmless beam of fluorescent light, to scan your teeth. The light bounces off of your teeth and back to a laser diode. Healthy teeth bounce back little to no fluorescence. Decay, on the other hand, returns higher amounts of fluorescent light. The higher the amount returned, the more significant the decay. The fluorescence is translated into a number, which is shown on the base unit of the laser. At the same time, the laser also emits a noise when it detects the presence of any decay.

What Are the Benefits of DIAGNOdent?

There are many benefits associated with the DIAGNOdent laser.
•  Scanning your teeth with the DIAGNOdent laser takes only a few minutes to complete.
•  Your scan is completely painless. We do not need to poke or prod at your teeth.
•  With the laser, we can detect cavities hidden under the surfaces of your teeth, where they cannot be seen with the naked eye or even with a digital x-ray.
•  We can detect the earliest signs of decay under the surfaces of your teeth.
•  Treatment can be provided sooner, allowing fillings to be shallower. This allows us to preserve more of your natural tooth structure.
•  The laser only emits harmless fluorescent light, and it can be used at every appointment.
•  Because we do not need to poke at your teeth, the laser can be helpful for patients who experience anxiety or fear about dental exams.
•  DIAGNOdent is the most effective method for detecting cavities in individual teeth.

Combined with traditional methods, DIAGNOdent allows us to detect the presence of cavities in their earliest stages, enabling us to provide you with prompt treatment to keep your mouth healthy.
